Liverpool Season Review: August-September
Friday, May 16, 2008

A good coach is not usually a good manager. I hope that applies for new Liverpool assistant Sammy Lee, returning to Anfield for the second time, I think. He wasn't a really good manager after taking over from Big Sam at Bolton, but he was certainly a good coach at Bolton and in the past with Liverpool, so hopefully, he'll continue what wonders ex-assistant Pako Ayestaran left behind.
And after a trophy-less season for the Red half of Merseyside, not in any sort of finals for the first time under Rafa Benitez, I really think the team has improved since Rafa took over in 2004. The inclusion of Fernando Torres certainly boosted Liverpool's goals tally. The signing of Ryan Babel also boosted the wingers department for Liverpool.

However things didn't start well for the new Reds' number nine, missing a penalty that ultimately resulted in a penalty-shootout lost to Portsmouth in the pre-season EPL Asian Cup.

Things started brighter for Fernando Torres, scoring on his home debut against Chelsea. With that, he rather instantly attained heroes status, but little did the Reds fans nor Rafa would realise how much he could get at the end of the season.

The first game before this Chelsea game was away to Aston Villa, with Liverpool drawing 1-1, Stevie G pulled a trick out of his bag and scored a magnificent free-kick.

Fernando Torres continued to score goals, and got a hat-trick against Reading in Liverpool's first game in the League Cup away to Reading. Yossi Benayoun was also on the score sheet that day as a majority of fringe players Liverpool came out 4-2 winners.

Liverpool then started their first Champions League away to FC Porto, trailing a goal down early to a Lucho Gonzalez penalty, Dirk Kuyt got a fortunate equaliser, and after Jermaine Pennant got himself sent off, a draw looked like a good result for the Reds.

So this is Liverpool's 2007/08 season for the months August and September. They started off pretty well, but just fell off the pace eventually. =(
Bye~!
